I’ve never held a gun before. In fact, I don’t think any of us who were there had done. You could tell by the way we were all so sheepish with it and how, even though it had no bullets, we all flinched as we pointed it at the carpet and practiced pulling the trigger. It felt very unnatural.
There was two of them, both Italian made, and they were very heavy. And big, too. How you’re supposed to slip them into the back of your waistband and wander nonchalantly down the street with them making a big bulge in your jacket I don’t know.
Looking closer, though, I spotted a disclaimer running along the barrel of each one. ‘Read manual before use’. Sensible advice, I guess. You wouldn’t want anyone getting killed, after all.
The picture above doesn’t show it so well as the light was so poor. It’s on the bottom part of the barrel.

Just over a decade ago I learned to shoot. In Texas, unsurprisingly. I was visiting colleagues and they used to go to the shooting gallery regularly and asked if I’d like to go. I said I’d never fired a gun so they said they’d show me how. Armed with a .38 Special, a 9mm semi-automatic pistol and a .357 Magnum, I went down to the range with them and learned just how much kickback these things have… and they’re loud! The .357 just about scared me to death but, I must confess, the 9mm semi was a lot of fun, pumping fifteen rounds in quick succession into a paper target at the other end of the aisle! My hosts were crack shots - he hunted deer with a pistol (because it was too easy with a rifle, he said) - I managed to hit the target most of the time.
It was a one-off experience. I’ve never been inclined to repeat it. I’ve never since felt any need to pick up a gun for any reason.
You didn’t explain *why* you were playing with guns tho’…

Don’t do it Nik! Life can’t be that bad. Just put the gun down and talk to someone. We all get colds mate - killing yourself is wrong - Indeed, I would have the hassle of removing you from my journal links list! Take some Echinacea for all our sakes.
